Mike McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) led the charge with two goals apiece as the eighth-ranked Statesmen hockey team overpowered Wentworth Institute of Technology 6-2 this afternoon at Matthews Arena, completing the season series sweep. Earlier this season, the Statesmen defeated the Leopards 7-0 in Geneva.
Hobart (11-3-0) opened the scoring just 2:37 into the contest, when Poirier netted his first goal of the game off a feed from first-year forward
Jason Merritt (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Wentworth senior forward Justin Anonas quickly provided the equalizer at the 5:13 mark. Although the Statesmen dominated the offensive zone, rattling off 17 shots, both teams entered the first intermission tied at 1.
Hobart regained its lead just 1:14 into the second stanza, when Poirier recorded his fifth tally of the season. The Statesmen’s leading scorer touched off an offensive flurry as first-year defenseman
Andrew Brennan (Milford, Mass.) and McCarthy scored in the frame.
The Statesmen led 4-2 at the end of the second period.

Adam Scott (Manchester, Mass.) capitalized on a Wentworth five-minute major penalty by lighting the lamp just 14 seconds apart to put the finishing touches on Hobart’s second straight win.
Hobart sophomore goaltender
Trevor Pieri (Needham, Mass.) stopped a season-high 22 offerings to earn his second victory of the season, while sophomore Alan Keeso turned away 35 Statesmen shots in the loss.
Hobart returns to action at 4:35 p.m. on Jan. 14, when the Statesmen travel to ECAC Northeast division leader Curry College.
