Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team defeated visiting RIT 3-0 on William Smith Field this afternoon. The win was the seventh in a row for the Herons and the 24th consecutive over the Tigers.
Junior Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) gave her squad all the offense it would need in the 14th minute, taking a cross from senior Heather Phillip (Cayuga/King Ferry, N.Y.) and placing a shot in the upper right corner of the cage. William Smith (9-3-0) carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime when the Herons took advantage of a Tiger miscue in the 39th minute. Junior back Leigh Williamson (Arlington/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) sent a cross in that bounced at the feet of sophomore goalie Lynette Serbinski (Colonial Forge/Stafford, Va.) and squirted under her hands to the waiting foot of first-year Julie Boardman-Brann (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.). Boardman-Brann tapped home the gimme from two feet off the goal line for her second goal of the year.
In the second half, sophomore Ali Art (Herricks/Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) headed home a corner kick by first-year Melissa Magazine (The Trevor Day School/New York, N.Y.) in the 76th minute to close out the scoring.
Serbinski finished with five saves for the Tigers (4-6-3), while senior Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) earned the shutout without making a save.
William Smith returns to action on Oct. 14, when the Herons host Nazareth College at 2 p.m. on Cozzens Field.
