Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.—William Smith first-year
Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) scored four goals and assisted on a fifth in the 10th-ranked Herons’ 8-1 rout of host Nazareth College in collegiate field hockey this afternoon. The eight goals are the most by a William Smith squad since scoring nine against Houghton on Sept. 2, 1994.
Hamilton’s nine points are a William Smith single game record, breaking the old mark of eight, held by six different players. Her four goals tie the single game record, now shared by six different players. Hamilton also tied the record for most goals in a game by a first-year, a mark shared by
Bettie Bair ’80 and
Kelly Martin ’84. Hamilton’s record-setting day catapulted her from fifth on the team in scoring to second.
Senior
Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) contributed three assists to the offensive outburst, while classmate
Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals.
The Golden Flyers (4-12) actually opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the match, but William Smith (14-3) responded with three goals before the break to seize control of the contest. Junior
Brittney Paye (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), Hamilton and Dennis netted the first session scores to give William Smith a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
The Herons came out of the half on fire scoring four goals (three by Hamilton) in a span of just over seven minutes. Senior
Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) closed out the scoring in the 60th minute.
In goal, sophomore
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) earned the win with four saves, while Katie May and Kristen McIntyre combined to make 11 stops for Nazareth.
The Herons are back in action Nov. 3-4 when they host the
Liberty League Championship Tournament. Top-seeded William Smith will battle Rensselaer (9-8) in the first semifinal on Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. St. Lawrence and Skidmore will follow at 1:30 p.m.
