Herons soar over Flyers, 69-35

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team posted its first win of the season, handing visiting Nazareth College its first loss, 69-35, in Bristol Gym tonight. Heron junior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) scored a game-high 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting.

William Smith (1-2) dominated the box score, outrebounding Nazareth 51-37, committing fewer turnovers (11 vs. 19), shooting better from the floor (.375 vs. .240), beyond the arc (.417 vs. .154), and at the line (.769 vs. .500). Senior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) joined Czajkowski in double digits with 10 points. First-year forward Robyn Capoto (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) paced a balanced rebounding effort with seven. Seven Herons had five or more boards in the contest.

Trialing 3-2 just three minutes into the contest, the Herons used a 16-4 run to seize control of the game. Czajkowski (3 FGs) and Foote (2 3FGs) each contributed six points during the surge that gave William Smith an 18-7 lead.

Nazareth (2-1) got within eight, 25-17, on a jumper by senior forward Stephanie Bowens (Nazareth Academy/Rochester, N.Y.), but a three-pointer by first-year guard Stephanie Cochran (Mount Olive/Budd Lake, N.J.) put the Herons back in front by double digits for good.

William Smith carried a 37-19 lead into a break thanks to a 7-0 run to end the first half. After the intermission, the Herons saw their lead balloon to as much as 39, before settling into the 34-point win.

Senior guard Sarah Homer (Bethlehem/Delmar, N.Y.) and first-year guard Kelly Dunne (Northport/East Northport, N.Y.) led the Golden Flyers with six points each.

William Smith is back in action on Dec. 2, when the Herons travel to Ithaca for another non-conference match up. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
