Box Score PISCATAWAY, N.J.—The Hobart lacrosse team dropped a heart-breaking 8-7 overtime decision to Rutgers University this afternoon. Sophomore attackman Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Georgetown, Ontario) recorded a Statesmen-leading three goals, but was upstaged by Devon Britts’s game-winner with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
The first quarter was a low-scoring affair. The Scarlet Knights (3-3, 1-1 ECAC) struck first at the 4:22 mark, but junior midfielder Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.) evened the match with his team-leading 10th goal of the season three minutes later.
Hobart (3-3, 0-2) seized the lead with back-to-back goals to start the second quarter. Veltman fired home an extra-man goal at the 10:07 mark, and junior midfielder James Dussich (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) made it 3-1 when he pounced on a Rutgers turnover in front of its own cage and fired a low-shot past goalie Greg Havalchak (16 saves).
The Scarlet Knights pulled even with back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart. The teams looked headed into halftime tied at three before Veltman took charge. He made it a 4-3 game just 21 ticks before the break, burying a feed from senior attackman Mike Conklin (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.). Hobart won the ensuing faceoff and nine seconds later red-shirt first-year David O’Quinn (Robinson/Burke, Va.) set up another Veltman tally.
Sophomore midfielder Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.) staked the Statesmen to a 6-3 lead with the first goal of the second half. Rutgers came roaring back with three unanswered to close out the frame and even the game at 6-all.
The Scarlet Knights slipped back into the lead at the 9:57 mark of the fourth quarter, but the advantage was fleeting. Currie netted his sixth goal of the season 38 seconds later to forge the fourth and final tie of the game and set up the drama of overtime.
Hobart senior goalie Mike DeSantis (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) turned in a career-high 14 saves, including five each in the second and fourth quarters.
Rutgers held a slim edge in shots, 41-39, and held a 10-8 advantage in faceoffs. The Statesmen picked up one more ground balls than their hosts, 34-33.
Hobart returns to action on March 28, when the Statesmen travel to Syracuse. Faceoff at the Carrier Dome is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will air live on WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca).
