Cortland tops field hockey

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The eighth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 11 Cortland on McCooey Field this afternoon. The loss drops the Herons to 10-2 overall, while the Red Dragons improve to 12-2.

Cortland opened the scoring in the 17th minute when sophomore Kylie Burghardt (Whitney Point/Lisle, N.Y.) converted a penalty corner.

William Smith pulled even 15 seconds before halftime when sophomore Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.), with her back to the cage, flipped a shot past junior Stacy Billings (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.). The goal was set up by a long pass from outside the circle by junior Katie Mancuso (Harpursville/Port Crane, N.Y.).

The Herons outshot the Red Dragons 7-3 in the first half and held a 4-3 edge on penalty corners. After the intermission, the momentum ebbed over to the visitors.

Cortland outshot its host 8-1 in the second stanza and took all four of the frame’s penalty corners. The Red Dragons reclaimed the lead in the 40th minute on Burghardt’s second goal, a blast from the top of the circle assisted by junior Kayla Chambers (Taconic Hills/Crayville, N.Y.).

Cortland got some breathing room in the 51st minute when first-year Brenda Semit (Holland Patent/Holland Patent, N.Y.) batted home a feed from senior Kristin Courtney (FDR/Hyde Park, N.Y.).

Billings earned the win with three saves, while junior Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) made two stops for William Smith.

The Herons are back in action on Oct. 13, when they host No. 4 Lebanon Valley at 1 p.m.
