Statesmen sink Mariners 55-9

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team sent visiting Merchant Marine Academy to its 13th consecutive loss with a 55-9 drubbing on Boswell Field. The Statesmen racked up 456 yards of offense, while limiting the Mariners to 116, including minus 18 in the first half.

Senior wideout James Wright (Olean/Olean, N.Y.) caught five first half passes for 100 yards and two first quarter touchdowns to lead the way. He passed Nico Karagosian ’97 to move into fourth place on the career receiving yards list with 1,682. Wright passed Luke Gutelius ’98 and Scott Yoder ’01 to move into fifth place on the career receptions list with 109. Wright also vaulted from sixth to fourth on the career touchdown receptions list with 15, passing Karagosian and teammate Ryan LiDrazzah (Kent School/San Diego, Calif.).

A junior, LiDrazzah caught four passes for a game-high 105 yards. He passed Gutelius to move into ninth place on the career receiving yards list with 1,356. Senior quarterback Andrew Strom (Novato/Novato, Calif.) completed nine first half passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, 10 different Hobart players carried the ball, with five different Statesmen finding the end zone. Senior Don Gilardi (Eastridge/Rochester, N.Y.) rushed for a game-high 61 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Junior Anthony Hobaica (Utica-Proctor/Utica, N.Y.), first-year Andrew Marlier (Lake Forest/Lake Forest, Ill.), sophomore Rob Nieves (Rye/Rye, N.Y.), and senior Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) also logged rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, Hobart (4-2, 3-1) forced a season-high four turnovers. Senior cornerback James Alexander (St. John’s Prep/Beverly, Mass.) doubled his career interception total with two first quarter takeaways and a fumble recovery. All three led to Statesmen touchdowns. Senior cornerback Nick Tarantino (East Aurora/East Aurora, N.Y.) posted his first career interception to end the Mariners’ final drive of the day.

Hobart scored touchdowns on six of its first eight possessions, while shutting out the Mariner offense. Merchant Marine (0-7, 0-4) trailed 41-2 at halftime.

The Mariners scored their only touchdown on the opening drive of the second half. Junior running back JJ Watson’s (Central Bucks East/Doylestown, Pa.) 1-yard plunge capped a 15-play, 64-yard drive that ran 8:15 off the game clock.

The 55 points are the most by the Statesmen since posting a 56-48 triple overtime win over Rensselaer on Sept. 24, 2005. The 46-point win is the most lopsided victory for Hobart since the Statesmen shut out St. Lawrence 47-0 on Sept. 29, 2001.

The Statesmen are back in action on Oct. 20, when they host the Saints. Kickoff for the Liberty League match up is scheduled for 1 p.m.
