Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The eighth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team dropped a non-conference match to fourth-ranked Lebanon Valley College 4-2 this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons fall to 10-3 overall, while the Flying Dutchmen improve their undefeated mark to 14-0.
LVC got on the board first, as sophomore Danielle Blase (William Tennent/Warminster, Pa.) tallied an unassisted goal after a scramble in front of the cage. The goal came in the seventh minute of play, and would be the only score for both teams in the first half.
After the break, the Flying Dutchmen netted the next two goals, both the result of penalty corners. Junior Erika Peter (High Point Regional/Wantage, N.J.) scored from sophomore Avery Carter (Perkiomen/Perkiomenville, Pa.) at 35:58, while sophomore Nicole Bomberger (Warwick/Lititz, Pa.) tallied from Carter in the 49th minute.
A minute later, William Smith began to mount a comeback, answering LVC’s goals with two of its own. Junior
Katie Mancuso (Harpursville/Port Crane, N.Y.) scored in the 50th minute to cut the visitor’s lead to 3-1. Just three minutes later, senior
Brittney Paye (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) knocked in a shot from the top of the circle, cutting the Herons’ deficit to one. The goal came after a penalty corner taken by junior
Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.).
Senior Shauna Enck (Manheim/Manheim, Pa.) notched one more for the Flying Dutchmen to secure the victory in the 67th minute.
LVC outshot William Smith 27-13, and held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Heron goalkeeper
Katie DeKraker ( Staples/Westport, Conn.) collected 11 saves, while counterpart Caitlin Baro (Pottsgrove/Stowe, Pa.) stopped four shots for the Flying Dutchmen.
The Herons will be in action again on Oct. 19, when they host Vassar for a Liberty League contest at 4 p.m.
