Bombers stun Herons in 2OT

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y.—The Ithaca College field hockey team stunned seventh-ranked William Smith this afternoon, ending the Herons’ eight-game win streak 2-1 in double overtime. Sophomore Krista Fieselmann (Bridgewater/Bridgewater, N.J.) netted the game-winner, off an assist from first-year Christine Franz (W. Windsor-Plainsboro/Plainsboro, N.J.), in the 88th minute.

William Smith outshot Ithaca 17-8 and had a huge advantage on penalty corners (21-4), but ran into, not one, but two hot goaltenders. Sophomore Chelsea Welsh (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia, N.Y.) blanked the Herons in the first half with three saves and returned to play both overtime periods without facing a shot, while sophomore Courtney Dowell (Massapequa/Massapequa, N.Y.) turned back 10 shots in the second half.

The two squads played through a scoreless first half. The Bombers came closest to scoring in the opening 35 minutes, but junior Charlotte Styer’s (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.) defensive save in the 12th minute kept goose eggs on the board.

After the break, William Smith (8-1) turned up the pressure, but couldn’t solve the Bombers’ goaltending.

In the 48th minute, it was Ithaca (2-6) that opened the scoring when Fieselmann finished a feed from junior Elyse Green (Shawnee/Medford, N.J.).

The Herons pulled even in the 54th minute on first-year Brittany Furlong’s (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, N.Y.) sixth goal of the season, setting the stage for the drama of overtime.

William Smith had several chances to take the lead in the final minutes of regulation, but Dowell made four of her 10 stops in the final three minutes. Junior Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) had the best chance to end the game in regulation, but her shot was thwarted by the defensive save of junior Marisa Frank (Bow/Bow, N.H.) in the 67th minute.

Junior goalie Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) made five saves for William Smith.

The Herons are back in action on Oct. 5, when they host Union in a Liberty League showdown. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on McCooey Field.
