Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior Tyler Webster (Acton-Boxboro/Acton, Mass.) headed in the game-winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation, lifting the Statesmen over Fredonia 2-1 in men’s soccer action this afternoon. Hobart improves to 11-2-3 overall, while the Blue Devils drop to 11-6-1 on the season.
Fredonia got on the board in the 28th minute following a free kick from senior Rob Esposito (Dover/Dover Plains, N.Y.). His shot, from 22 yards in front of the goal to the upper-left corner of the net, gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, the Statesmen caught a break as Fredonia’s defense let in an own goal, tying the game at 1-1. Hobart junior Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) started the play by taking a shot on goal, but the Blue Devils’ attempt to clear the ball ended up in the back of their own net.
After over 89 minutes of scoreless second-half action, sophomore Grant Morrison (Glenniffer/Paisley, Scotland) connected with Webster on a corner kick for the game-winner. The goal was Webster’s team-leading eighth of the season. He also leads the Liberty League in game-winning goals with six.
Hobart junior goalkeeper Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) recorded four saves in the victory. He made a crucial save at the end of the first half, when he deflected Fredonia first-year Peter Dagel’s (Gates Chili/Rochester, N.Y.) point-blank shot in the 41st minute. Senior goalie Scott Bergen (Mohonasen/Schenectady, N.Y) collected nine saves for the Blue Devils.
The Statesmen out shot Fredonia 22-10, and held a decisive 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Hobart will be in action again next Friday, Nov.2, when it travels to Canton for the Liberty League Tournament. The fourth-seeded Statesmen will face top-seeded St. Lawrence at 11 a.m.
