#14 Statesmen down Red Hawks, 3-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 14th-ranked Hobart College soccer team improved to 8-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Liberty League this afternoon, defeating Rensselaer 3-1. The Red Hawks dropped to 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in conference action.

Sophomore midfielder Sam Wisner (Wayland/Wayland, Mass.) put the Statesmen on the board in the ninth minute, after a corner kick from classmate Grant Morrison (Gleniffer/Paisley, Scotland).

Less than 10 minutes later, senior Gary Sroka (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied for the Red Hawks. He caught junior Statesmen goalkeeper Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) off guard, ripping a shot from 24 yards out.

Rensselaer out shot its host 8-2 in the first half. The teams took a 1-1 draw into the break.

Shortly into the second half, sophomore midfielder Tom Moulton (Providence Country Day/Coventry, R.I.) tallied a long shot of his own, this one from 28 yards out, to give the Statesmen a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute. Junior forward Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) netted an insurance goal at 58:23, after beating his defender and booting a hard shot past first-year Red Hawk goalie Alex Penny (Northport/Northport, N.Y.) into the lower left corner.

Hobart out shot RPI 11-5 in the second half, making total shots for both teams equal at 13 apiece. Rensselaer held a slim 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Van Dellon and Penny each finished with five saves, with Van Dellon picking up his sixth win of the season.

The Statesmen will be in action again tomorrow, when they host Vassar for a Liberty League match at 2 p.m.
