Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior defender Keenan Simons (Cardinal Mooney/Bradenton, Fla.) netted the game-tying goal in the 90th minute to force overtime in today’s Liberty League men’s soccer match up between Vassar College and the 14th-ranked Statesmen. After two scoreless overtime periods the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Hobart now stands at 8-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the Liberty League, while Vassar holds a 6-3-1 overall mark and is 1-2-1 in conference action.
The Brewers struck first, thanks to first-year Ben Scaglione (Elizabethtown Lewis/Elizabethtown, N.Y.). He connected following a low cross from sophomore Alex Freund (Francis Parker/Chicago, Ill.) in the 21st minute.
In the final minute of regulation, first-year Justin Dotzman (Council Rock South/Holland, Pa.) threw the ball in to sophomore Sam Wisner (Wayland/Wayland, Mass.). Wisner flicked the ball to his left, straight to the head of Simons, who found the back of the net for his first career goal.
With 20 seconds left in the first overtime, Vassar’s Freund had a chance to win the game, but his effort was stopped by junior Statesmen goalie Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.). Freund had another shot in the second overtime, this time on an open net, but he placed the ball just wide.
The Statesmen had a last-minute scoring opportunity as well, when senior Brad Weinberg (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) crossed the ball to junior Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) with 50 seconds remaining in the game. Riso’s shot was wide, narrowly missing the goal.
Hobart held a large 38-7 advantage in shots, and took 14 corner kicks to the Brewers’ one.
Vassar goalkeeper Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill East/Cherry Hill, N.J.) collected 10 saves in the effort. Classmate Matthew Belli (Arlington/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) posted a key team save in the 86th minute, stopping a wide-open shot from Wisner.
Van Dellon finished with three saves. He now owns a 6-1-1 record in goal.
Hobart will be on the road the week, traveling to Ithaca on Oct. 10 for a non-conference match at 4:30 p.m.
