Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.--The Hobart College football team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 30-14 victory at the University of Rochester this afternoon. The win gives the Statesmen a share of the Liberty League Championship. Rensselaer, a 20-14 winner over Union, earned the conference's automatic bid by virtue of the Engineers' win over the Statesmen.
Hobart's record-setting offense has drawn the big headlines this season, but it was the defense that was most impressive for the Statesmen on this day.
Senior cornerback James Alexander recorded six tackles and a career-high three interceptions, while junior free safety Lance Boyington registered five stops and two picks. Junior linebacker Justin Hager matched his career-high with 19 tackles, while junior defensive tackle Ryan Aruck also reached double digits (10 tackles).
Alexander's first interception of the day led to Hobart's first touchdown. Senior quarterback Andrew Strom capped a six-play, 45-yard drive with a 20-yard pass to senior James Wright () for a 7-0 lead with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.
Strom completed 20-of-31 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. In the process he broke Greg Helmer's single season mark for completions, raising the standard to 197.
Rochester (6-4, 4-2) pulled even with an 18-play, 69-yard drive that ran 9:30 off the game clock. Matt Bielecki (42 carries, 192 yards, 2 TDs) dove in from 1-yard out for the score with 3:17 left in the half.
Hobart (8-2, 6-1) responded with a pair of quick strikes before the intermission. First-year Andrew Marlier's 1-yard plunge wrapped up a 4-play, 47-yard drive that took just 42 seconds.
After the defense forced Rochester to go three and out, the Statesmen moved 71 yards in four plays that took just 31 seconds. Junior wideout Ryan LiDrazzah (7 rec., 109 yds) made the drive's big play, collecting a 41-yard pass from Strom. Sophomore wideout Tyler Vincent caught Strom's second touchdown pass 46 seconds before the half. The extra point was blocked, sending Hobart into the break with a 20-7 lead.
The Yellowjackets scored on their first possession of the second half, a 13-yard run by Bielecki to make it a 20-14 game.
Still trailing by six late in the third quarter, Rochester faced fourth and 3 from the Hobart 28. Quarterback Adam Barrett scrambled, but Alexander and Aruck stuffed the run for a 1-yard loss, effectively ending the Yellowjackets' last quality scoring chance.
Hobart sealed the victory with 10 fourth quarter points on a 33-yard Dominick Ancona field goal and a 2-yard run by Anthony Hobaica (12 att., 50 yds). Ancona has 10 field goals this season, one shy of Shawn Fazio's season record.
