Lions end Herons' title hopes

TRENTON, N.J.--The 12th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team saw its hopes of a national championship come to an end in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament this afternoon. The fifth-ranked College of New Jersey used a three-goal outburst in a span of four minutes to propel the Lions to a 5-1 victory.

Katie Reuther got the ball rolling for the home team, converting a penalty stroke in the 18th minute. Less than two minutes later, Jessica Falcone scored off an assist from Sheri Grondski. Less than 60 seconds after that, Falcone found the back of the cage again, this time set up by Leigh Mitchell, to send TCNJ into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

The Lions (17-2) outshot the Herons 13-4 in the first 35 minutes and had an 8-3 advantage on penalty corners.

After the intermission, New Jersey needed just 85 seconds to score a fourth goal, this one off the stick of Mary Waller on a penalty corner. Mitchell made it 5-0 in the 50th minute to close the home team's scoring.

William Smith first-year Brittney Furlong (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, N.Y.) finally solved the TCNJ defense, logging her ninth goal of the season off a feed from junior Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.).

Goalie Caitlin Gregory went the distance for New Jersey, making five saves, while junior Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) made four stops and allowed four goals in 44:30.

William Smith ends the season with a 16-5 overall record.
