Herons top Medaille in hoops opener

Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y.--The William Smith College basketball team opened the 2007-08 season with a 74-68 win at Medaille this afternoon. Graduate student Paula Foote led four Herons in double digits with 14 points.

William Smith shot 44.8 percent from the floor, including 46.7 percent from three-point range, while limiting the host Mavericks 36.5 percent and 14.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Junior Latasha Coney and sophomore Erin Cunningham both contributed 12 points to the winning cause, while senior Stephanie Czajkowski scored 10 with a team-high six rebounds. Senior Marisa Vespa chipped in nine points and seven assists.

Medaille, a 2007 NCAA Tournament team, scored the first two baskets and kept the lead until late in the first half.

Trailing 30-26 with five minutes to go, William Smith outscored its host 14-7 to carry a three-point lead into the break.

The Herons maintained the lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 11 and making all six of their free throws in the final minute to hold off a late Medialle surge.

William Smith will be back in action on Nov. 20, when the Herons travel to Nazareth. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
