Hobart hockey edges Neumann, 4-3

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team defeated Neumann College 4-3 tonight in ECAC West action at The Cooler. The Statesmen improve to 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league, while the Knights fall to 3-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Nick DeCroo (Sarver, Pa.) tallied two unassisted goals late in the third period to give Hobart its third win of the season. DeCroo scored on a power play to tie the game 3-3 with 4 minutes, 25 seconds left on the clock, then lit the lamp again less than two minutes later with the game-winner.

Hobart’s first two goals of the night came in the first period, thanks to sophomore Blake Bonham (Toronto, Ont.) and senior Shawn Houde (Manchester, N.H.). Bonham netted his first goal of the season in the third minute on a power play, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. Neumann answered a few minutes later with a power-play tally of its own, from junior Kyle Casey (Stratford, Ont.), before Houde wrapped up the first period scoring on another power play in the 11th minute. The Statesmen went into the first break with a 2-1 lead.

The Knights came out firing in the second stanza, and posted two more goals, both on power plays. Casey tallied again, 7:57 into the period, followed by senior Mark Van Vliet (Dorchester, Ont.) at 18:22. Neumann owned a 3-2 lead heading into the second break.

The third period was scoreless until the last five minutes, when DeCroo tallied his second and third goals of the season, giving the Statesmen the exciting ECAC West victory.

Junior Statesmen goalkeeper Keith Longo (Hopedale, Mass.) recorded 36 saves and the win, while senior Mike Collichio (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up 21 saves in net for the Knights.

Neumann out shot Hobart 39-25, and converted three of 11 power play opportunities, while the Statesmen converted three of six power plays.

Hobart will be in action at The Cooler again tomorrow, Nov. 3, when it hosts ECAC West opponent Lebanon Valley College at 7 p.m.
