Box Score PITTSFORD, N.Y.—Senior forward John Grazioli (St. Anthony's/Melville, N.Y.) led four Statesmen in double digits with a game-high 27 points as the Hobart College basketball team knocked off Empire 8 preseason favorite St. John Fisher College 84-80.
Sophomore guard Sean McHugh (Holy Trinity/Mineola, N.Y.) scored the game's first points on a traditional three-point play. He finished the night with 10 points.
Less than a minute later, Chris Baltz answered with a three-pointer for Fisher (0-1) to tie the score for the final time. Baltz paced the Cardinals with 24 points.
Hobart (2-1) went on a 15-3 run to seize control of the contest. Grazioli scored seven points during the surge, while first-year guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) added five of his 19 points.
St. John Fisher trailed by just five with less than four minutes remaining in the first half, but the Statesmen took a 46-32 lead into the locker room thanks to an 11-2 run.
The Statesmen still led by 14 with four minutes remaining in the contest, but the Cardinals made one last push to salvage a win in their home opener. Fisher's 14-2 run got the home team within two, 80-78, with 44 ticks left on the clock, but Grazioli answered with a layup to restore the four-point lead.
The Cardinals cut to two once more with 18 seconds left, but first-year guard Mark Bruce (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) made a pair of free throws to close out the night's scoring.
Senior center Dan Birney (Massapequa/Massapequa, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points of the bench as the Statesmen reserves outscored their counterparts 19-13.
Hobart is back in action on Nov. 27, when the Statesmen host Alfred in Bristol Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be seen live online on ECAC.tv.
