Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College first-year Adam Salzmann (Kingston/Connelly, N.Y.) scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Hobart basketball team to an 87-78 win over visiting Alfred University in a non-conference game. Salzmann was 9-of-11 from the floor, including five three-pointers, and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

The Statesmen (3-1) scorched the Bristol Gym nets, connecting on 46 percent of their shots from the floor, including 50 percent from beyond the arc, and 71.4 percent from the line. The Saxons (0-4) shot even better from the floor (49.1), but managed just 38.1 percent from three-point range and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Salzmann sank his first three-point attempt of the night to give Hobart a 3-0 lead, an advantage the Statesmen never relinquished. Less than four minutes into the game, another Salzmann three gave Hobart a 15-4 lead. The Statesmen maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the half, carrying a 41-28 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Salzmann led all scorers at the intermission with 15 points, while first-year guard Tim Llewellyn (York West/York, Pa.) notched 10 of his 15 points before the break.

In the second half, Alfred was able to take advantage of a couple of Hobart players in foul trouble, whittling the deficit down to five with 13:25 remaining (49-44) and 9:32 left (56-51), but each time the Statesmen answered the challenge by pushing their lead back into double digits.

First-year forward Ellis Walsh (Penfield/Penfield, N.Y.) led four Alfred players in double digits with 19 points. Junior guard Carl Embury (Perry/Perry, N.Y.) added 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Hobart is off to its best start since the 2004-05 squad also went 3-1 through four games. The Statesmen are back in action on Dec. 1, when they host Keuka College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
