Statesmen suffer first loss of season

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y.—The second-ranked Hobart College hockey team fell to ECAC West rival and sixth-ranked Manhattanville 3-1 tonight in front of a sellout crowd at the Playland Ice Casino. The loss marks the Statesmen’s first loss of the season. They now hold an 8-1-0 overall record and a 2-1-0 mark in conference play, while the Valiants improve to 7-1-1 on the season and 3-1-0 in ECAC West action.

Manhattanville struck first, 9 minutes, 35 seconds into the first period, and took a 1-0 lead into the first break. Kevin Maresco was credited with the score, assisted by Brendan McIntyre and AJ Mikkelsen.

Senior forward Shawn Houde (Manchester, N.H.) evened things up at 1-1 with his sixth goal of the year on a power play at 8:35 in the second period, but the tie was short-lived. The Valiants scored on back-to-back power plays to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. Junior Statesmen Andrew Brennan (Milford, Mass.) and Ryan Adler (Piscataway, N.J.) recorded assists on Houde’s goal.

Despite out shooting Manhattanville 19-11 in the third period, the Statesmen could not recover.

Hobart junior Keith Longo (Hopedale, Mass.) collected a season-high 47 saves in net, while Manhattanville’s Paul Reimer recorded 45 stops in the win.

The Statesmen went 1-for-12 on the power play, while the Valiants converted 2-of-11 man-up opportunities.

Hobart will be in action again tomorrow, Dec. 1, when they travel to Utica for an ECAC West contest at 7 p.m.
