Wildcats edge Statesmen, 73-72

Box Score CAZENOVIA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team fell to Cazenovia 73-72, in a barnburner this afternoon. The Statesmen drop to 4-4 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 3-4 overall.

Senior Rob Genovese (Deerfield Academy/Geneva, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for the Statesmen, netting 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while classmate John Grazioli (St. Anthony’s/Melville, N.Y.) posted 14 points, nine boards, and four blocks. First-year Robert Estep (West York Area/York, Pa.) also scored 14, and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Wildcats held a 13-point lead with 4 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in the first half. The Statesmen went on a 10-4 run to end the half, taking a seven point deficit into the break. Genovese was responsible for five of Hobart’s points during the run, including a traditional three-point play.

The Statesmen tied the game at 63-63 with 5:59 to play in the second stanza, following a good layup by sophomore Sean McHugh (Holy Trinity/Mineola, N.Y.). McHugh finished with eight points and a game-high six assists.

Hobart took a four point lead with 2:44 left on the clock, after a three-pointer by first-year Tim Llewellyn (West York Area/York, Pa.). The next time up the floor, Cazenovia’s Eric Sauer answered with a three of his own, bringing the hosts back within one, 70-69.

Two made free throws from McHugh put the Statesmen up 72-69 with 1:11 remaining, but Sauer scored again to make it a one-point game. Cazenovia’s Eric Latendress went on to score with four seconds to go, giving the Wildcats a 73-72 advantage. Hobart had one last chance, but could not capitalize.

Latendress finished with a game-high 23 points, while Sauer registered 17. Cazenovia shot 43.8 percent from behind the arc in the second half.

Hobart will be back in action Dec. 28-29, when it travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., to play in the Land of Magic Classic.
