Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) scored 16 points to lead William Smith College to a 79-64 win over California Lutheran University in the championship game of the Posada Royale Tournament. The Herons shot 45.1 percent from the floor, including 6 of 13 from three-point range, while limiting the Regals to 37.5 percent.
Czajkowski connected on 8 of 14 shots from the floor to pace a balanced scoring effort, while also grabbing seven rebounds. First-year forward
Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) contributed a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while senior guard
Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) added 10 points and a game-high six assists.
Cal Lutheran (3-4) put three players in double digits, led by Mary Placido’s 18 points.
William Smith (5-1) started the game on a 14-2 run, keyed by three straight baskets by Cunningham. Late in the first half, the Regals used a 13-2 surge to take their only lead of the contest, 29-28, on a pair of free throws by Placido at the 5:24 mark. The Herons countered with a 10-1 run and carried a 38-34 advantage into halftime.
William Smith never let its lead slip below four points, keeping Cal Lutheran at arm’s length. The Herons blew the game wide open with a 10-2 push that ballooned their lead to 17 with three minutes to go.
Vespa, who scored 19 points in the Herons 61-58 upset of No. 15 George Fox in the first round of the tournament, took home MVP honors, while Czajkowski earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
William Smith is back in action on Jan. 5, when the Herons travel to SUNY Potsdam. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
