#2 Rochester holds off Hobart 70-57

John Grazioli
Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior forward John Grazioli (St. Anthony’s/Melville, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Hobart College, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Statesmen over No. 2 Rochester tonight. The Yellowjackets put three players in double digits in a 70-57 win in Bristol Gym.

Senior guard Robert Dominiak (Birch Wathen Lenox/New York, N.Y.) paced the visitors with 17 points. Senior center Jon Onyiriuka (Corning West/Painted Post, N.Y.) contributed 16 points, including the 1,000th of his career (he now has 1,015). Senior forward Dan Milbrand (Williamsville East/Williamsville, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points off the bench. Rochester’s leading scorer, senior forward Uche Ndubizu (Windsor-Plainsboro/West Windsor, N.Y.) was limited to just four points, but he did grab a game-high 13 rebounds.

While Grazioli was the only Statesmen to reach double digits, sophomore guard Sean McHugh (Holy Trinity/Mineola, N.Y.) and first-year guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) both scored nine points. Llewellyn also had a game-high five steals and four assists.

Rochester (7-0) led by as many as eight in the first half, but a McHugh three-pointer with 2:44 remaining in the stanza tied the game, 26-26. The Yellowjackets countered with back-to-back threes to take a six-point lead. Hobart (4-2) scored the final point of the half at the free throw line to go into the break down five, 32-27.

A traditional three-point point play by Onyiriuka early in the second half, gave Rochester another six-point edge, but consecutive threes by McHugh and Grazioli tied the game at 35 with 18:02 remaining.

Rochester responded to the threat with a 19-6 run that built its largest lead of the game, 54-41, with 9:36 left. The Statesmen made one more run at the Yellowjackets, using a 6-0 push that included four consecutive Grazioli free throws to get within seven, 60-53, with 2:29 to go.

However, Rochester, which struggled from the free throw line all night (.583, 14 of 24), made crucial shots from the line when it counted most to keep Hobart at arms length.

The Statesmen are back in action on Sun., Dec. 9, when they host Elmira. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans unable to attend the game can watch all of the action online with Live Stats and ECAC.tv’s streaming video.
