Heron lax handles Ithaca, 21-7

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) netted six goals and tallied three assists to lead the William Smith College lacrosse team past Ithaca College, 21-7, on Senior Day in Geneva. The Herons close out the regular season with a 10-5 mark, while the Bombers drop to 9-5 overall.

Sophomore attacker Nina Sperry (Daniel Hand/Madison, Conn.) added four goals for the Herons, with an assist, while junior midfielder Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and first-year attacker Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) each totaled three goals an a helper. Sophomore attacker Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) chipped in two goals and two assists as well.

For the Bombers, junior Meagan Howell (Newark/Newark, N.Y.) led the way with four goals, while sophomore attacker Becky Bedard (East Longmeadow/East Longmeadow, Mass.) added three assists.

Fitzgerald started the scoring, netting her first goal of the day just 1:39 into the game. Stahl added a tally 20 seconds later, assisted by senior Jessica Scott (Waynflete School/Portland, Maine), giving the Herons a quick 2-0 lead.

Ithaca responded with a goal by Howell at 3:20, but William Smith came back to net five unanswered, and owned a 7-1 lead just 10 minutes into the first half.

William Smith took a commanding 10-4 lead into the break, then came out firing again in the second half, outscoring the Bombers 11-3.

Junior goalkeeper Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) collected eight saves for the Herons, while Lindsay Mayfield (Nichols/East Aurora, N.Y.), Emily Brooks (Ward Melville/Setauket, N.Y.), and Courtney Dowell (Massapequa/Massapequa, N.Y.) combined for 16 saves for the Bombers.

William Smith outshot the visitors 44-25, and connected on 4-of-5 free position shots.

The 16th-ranked Herons will be in action at the Liberty League Tournament on May 4-5, hosted by No. 1 Hamilton. Third-seeded William Smith will take on second-seeded Union in the semifinal round.
