Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa.—The William Smith College soccer team defeated Wittenberg University 3-1 this morning in the first game of the Gettysburg College Players Cup. Three veteran Herons scored in the season opener, while first-year goalkeeper Alice Binns (Beaver Country Day/Boston, Mass.) earned her first career win after collecting four saves.

Senior forward Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) started the scoring in the 23rd minute of play. She was set up by first-year forward Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.). Approximately four minutes later, sophomore midfielder Katelyn Tyson (Leland/San Jose, Calif.) found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner on a clean-up play, after a shot by classmate Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) hit the right post.

In the 35th minute, junior midfielder Julia Bernay (Newport Harbor/Newport Beach, Calif.) netted her first goal of the year thanks to a helper from senior defender Tracy Stankavage (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.).

Total shots and corner kicks were fairly even for the two teams. The Herons took 10 shots to the Tigers’ 11, while both teams had three set-up opportunities from the corner.

William Smith (1-0) will be in action in Gettysburg again tomorrow, when they take on Scranton at 1 p.m.
