Box Score UTICA, N.Y.--The sixth-ranked Hobart soccer team remained unbeaten with a 4-2 non-conference victory at Utica this afternoon. Junior Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) led the Statesmen with a goal and an assist.
Hobart (4-0-0) outshot the Pioneers (2-2-0) 20-10 and held an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.
In the 24th minute, first-year Kevin McCarthy (Ocean City/Seaville, N.J.) opened the scoring with a shot in close set up by Riso. It was McCarthy's first goal of his collegiate career.
In the 37th minute, junior Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) served a free kick into the box that junior Matt Schwartz (Lower Merion/Wynnewood, Pa.) headed in for a 2-0 lead.
Utica halved its deficit in the 39th minute when Robert Stevens knocked in a rebound. Hobart got the goal back in the 43rd minute, thanks to senior Brad Weinberg's (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) first goal of the year.
After the break, the Statesmen turned up the pressure, outshooting their hosts 12-3. Riso made it a 4-1 game in the 55th minute with a long cross that ricocheted off the far post and into the cage.
The Pioneers got the afternoon's final tally from Kevin Chapla in the 71st minute, but it was too little, too late.
Junior goalie Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.) earned the victory with four saves, while Utica's Andrew Miller was credited with 10 stops.
