Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—In the first game of the Heron Invitational, the 11th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team continued its hot start by downing Oberlin College 7-1 at McCooey Field. With the victory, the Herons improve to 3-0 while the Yeowomen fall to 3-3.
Leading the way offensively for William Smith was junior
Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) who notched two goals and two assists for six points. In addition, first-year
Brittany Furlong (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, N.Y.) recorded two goals of her own, while sophomore
Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) scored a goal and an assist.
Just under four minutes in, Landahl opened the scoring by redirecting a cross from classmate
Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) into the upper right corner of the cage to give William Smith a 1-0 lead. The Herons would score four more unanswered goals in the half, getting one from senior Brittany Paye (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), two in a row from Furlong and another from Landahl to extend their lead to 5-0.
William Smith continued to control the game in the second half and got two more additional goals from first-year
Natalie Blauvelt (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) and Hamilton to build a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Yeowomen, who were outshot by the Herons 27-5 in the game, became the first team to score on William Smith this season when sophomore Catherine Meredith (East/Denver Colo.) drove the ball past junior goalkeeper
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) with 23 minutes to go, making it 7-1.
Impressively, the Herons have outscored their opponents 17-1 so far this year.
In net, DeKraker finished the game with two saves, while senior Lauren Malinowski recorded 11 for Oberlin. First-year
Chelsea Snyder (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) also saw time in the cage for William Smith (11:24) without facing a shot.
The Heron Invitational resumes tomorrow when the Yeowomen take on St. Lawrence University (4-0) at 11 a.m. Later, the Herons will compete in the last match-up of the weekend when they play Susquehanna University (2-3) at 2 p.m.
