Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team defeated the University of Rochester 1-0 this afternoon in the Statesmen’s home-opener. Hobart, ranked sixth in the nation and first in the Northeast Region, improved to an undefeated 5-0-0 on the season, while the Yellowjackets dropped to 3-2-1 overall. The win was the first time Hobart defeated Rochester since the 2003 season.

After a foul in the box was called on Rochester goalie Michael Peacock (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) in the 73rd minute of play, senior Statesman Tyler Webster (Acton-Boxboro/Acton, Mass.) nailed home a penalty kick for the only score of the game.

In the first half of back-and-forth action, Hobart out shot its visitor 7-2, though the Statesmen had few opportunities to penetrate the Yellowjacket defense. Shots by senior Brad Weinberg (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.), junior Matt Schwartz (Lower Merion/Wynnewood, Pa.), and junior Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) were all stopped short by Rochester senior goalkeeper Paco Corbalan (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira, N.Y.).

After the scoreless first half, it looked to be much of the same in the second. The Yellowjackets turned up the offensive pressure, out shooting the Statesmen 8-6, with four of those shots coming in the final few minutes of the game, but could not get past Hobart’s junior netminder Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.). Van Dellon squashed attempts from Rochester sophomore Scott Cady (Columbine/Columbine, Colo.), senior Nick Mikolenko (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), and first-year Steve Welles (Horseheads/Syracuse, N.Y.), and broke up a potential Yellowjacket opportunity on a throw-in in the final minute.

Van Dellon finished with five saves and his second shutout of the season for Hobart, while Corbalan picked up four saves for Rochester before he left the game with an injury in the 54th minute. Peacock finished with one stop.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Sept. 21, with they travel to Union to open Liberty League play at 4 p.m.
