Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College soccer team blanked fifth-ranked Union College 3-0 this afternoon in a battle of two of the nation’s top teams. The Herons extended their unbeaten streak to seven, improving to 7-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen dropped their first game of the season, falling to 7-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league. The last time Union was shutout in Geneva was in the 2003 conference playoffs when the Herons prevailed 1-0.
First-year Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) and senior
Courtney Peters (Williamson/Williamson, N.Y.) led William Smith with a goal and an assist each, while sophomore
Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was responsible for the game-winner. First-year goalkeeper
Alice Binns (Beaver Country Day/Boston, Mass.) collected a season-high six saves en route to her second shutout of the year.
Stevens tallied the first goal of the game in the 26th minute off a Nasypany cross. She lofted the ball over Union goalkeeper Melissa McDonald (Phillips Academy Andover/Lynnfield, Mass.) from six yards out.
William Smith struck again 31 seconds before halftime. Sophomore
Julie Boardman-Brann (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.) booted a corner kick straight to the head of Peters, who went on to net her fifth career goal. The Herons held a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the 73rd minute, Nasypany headed in an insurance goal from six yards out. She was set up by junior
Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.) and Peters.
Although held scoreless, the Dutchwomen out shot their hosts 12-9. In the 66th minute, junior Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme/East Lyme, Conn.) had an opportunity to score after a foul was called on William Smith, but her shot was stopped short by Binns. With five minutes left on the clock, Union junior Sara Wilson (Minnechaug/Wilbraham, Mass.) had a similar opportunity, but shot the ball just wide of the goal.
The Herons recorded the only two corner kicks of the game.
McDonald and sophomore goalie Mia Simone (Academy of the Holy Names/Rexford, N.Y.) each recorded one save for the Dutchwomen.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 22, when they host Skidmore (3-2-2, 0-1-0) for a league match at 2 p.m.
