Brittney Paye (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in the second overtime to lift the 12th-ranked Heron field hockey team to a 3-2 Liberty League victory at No. 20 St. Lawrence this afternoon.
Paye ended the match in the 92nd minute, driving home a shot from just inside the top of the circle on a penalty corner. Junior
Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) earned the assist for sending the insertion to Paye.
It's the longest field hockey match for the Herons since Nov. 8, 2003, when William Smith lost to Skidmore 2-1 in a double overtime affair that lasted 97 minutes, 16 seconds. It's the first double overtime victory for the Herons since Oct. 1, 2002, when they bested Rochester 2-1 in a contest that lasted 87:59.
Junior goalie
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) finished the day with nine saves, including two in the first OT and another in the second.
In the 24th minute, sophomore
Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) added to her team-leading goal total with her eighth score of the season. First-year
Brittany Furlong (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on a scramble in front of the cage following a penalty corner.
After the break, Furlong made it a 2-0 Heron lead when she scored off a feed from Paye in the 50th minute. That goal also came after a penalty corner. William Smith (5-0, 1-0) held a 10-6 advantage on penalty corners and a slim 23-21 lead on shots.
The Saints (5-1, 0-1) halved their deficit in the 58th minute when Lydia Gibson redirected a shot by Mackenzie Kersen. SLU evened the match less than two minutes later, when Julia Kiernan's shot deflected off a Heron defender and into the cage.
William Smith nearly got out of town with a win in regulation, but Landahl's shot in the 68th minute was stopped on the line by sophomore defender Jen Stetson.
St. Lawrence goalie Lindsey Taylor posted eight saves, including five in the first half.
William Smith is back in action on Sept. 22, when the Herons travel to Hamilton. The Liberty League match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
