Statesmen, Thoroughbreds play to 2-2 draw

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked Hobart College soccer team tied Skidmore College 2-2 after a hard-fought double-overtime Liberty League match. The Statesmen are now 5-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the league, while the Thoroughbreds move to 1-5-2 and 0-1-1 in conference play.

Skidmore tied the game to force overtime with 1 minute, 13 seconds left in to play in regulation. Thoroughbred sophomore Mark Fiskio recorded the goal, assisted by senior Chris Fincke.

Hobart struck first, in the fifth minute of action. Sophomore Tom Moulton (Providence Country Day/Coventry, R.I.) tallied unassisted to put the Statesmen up early. Neither team would score for the remainder of the first half. Hobart carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

In the 54th minute, first-year Statesman Kevin McCarthy (Ocean City/Seaville, N.J.) netted his second career goal, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. A few short minutes later, Skidmore cut the lead to one following an unassisted tally from Fincke.

The Statesmen out shot their hosts 17-7, and took six corner kicks to the Thoroughbred’s five.

Junior goalkeeper Phil DaCosta (Manchester Memorial/Manchester, N.H.) recorded one save and the tie for Hobart, while classmate Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) stopped one shot in 20 minutes of overtime relief. Skidmore goalie Chris Ford finished with five saves.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Sept. 25, when they host St. John Fisher for a non-conference contest at 4:30 p.m.
