Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) scored a season-high 22 points and collected 10 rebounds to lead the William Smith College basketball team to its fifth consecutive victory, 70-56 over Lycoming College. The Herons ran away from the Warriors in the first half and kept the visitors at arm’s length in the second half, snapping Lycoming’s three-game winning streak.

William Smith (8-1) shot 46.9 percent from the floor, including 5 of 10 three-pointers, in the first half, while harassing the Warriors (8-5) into a woeful 23.5 percent effort, connecting on just 1 of 13 from behind the arc. The Herons opened the game on a 14-2 run, with run being the operative word. William Smith looked to push the tempo at every opportunity in the opening 20 minutes, a pace Lycoming wasn’t ready for.

The Warriors missed their first five shots from the floor, while making three turnovers in the first three minutes. Like William Smith’s overall effort, the Herons’ opening push was a balanced scoring effort as six different players contributed to the surge. Overall, 13 of William Smith’s 14 players recorded at least one point.

The Herons led by as many as 22 and carried a 39-19 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

After the break, William Smith expanded its lead to a game-high 26, 49-23, with a 10-4 run to start the session that was capped by six straight points from Cunningham.

Working against the Heron reserves, Lycoming was able to trim its deficit down to single digits, 65-56, with 82 seconds remaining, but William Smith’s starters returned to the floor and made 5 of 6 from the charity stripe to close out the win.

Graduate student guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) contributed nine points, four assists, and two blocked shots before fouling out, while senior forward Stephanie Czjakowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) narrowly missed a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds and eight points, as well as two blocks. Junior guard Latasha Coney (Lyons/Lyons, N.Y.) chipped in seven rebounds, five points, five assists, and four steals.

Junior forward Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg, Pa.) was the only Warrior to reach double digits with 19 points and three blocked shots.

William Smith returns to action on Tues., Jan. 15, when the Herons host Ithaca. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m.
