Lucky #7: Herons handle Hawks

Box Score TROY, N.Y.—The 23rd-ranked William Smith College basketball team defeated Rensselaer 92-68 to post its seventh consecutive win. Senior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) led the visitors with a game-high 19 points in the Liberty League opener for both teams.

At 10-1, the Herons are off to their best start since the 1997-98 squad won 11 of its first 12. First-year guard Mollie Danahy (Troy/Troy, N.Y.) contributed a season-high 18 points, while graduate student guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) chipped in 16 points, including three threes.

William Smith shot a season-high 52.1 percent from the floor, including 47.1 percent from long range, while committing a season-low nine turnovers.

The Red Hawks shot nearly as well (.484 FG%), but suffered from 25 turnovers. Caitlyn Charest paced the home team with 16 points. Elizabeth Barker led RPI to a 40-31 advantage on the glass, posting a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

William Smith scored the first four points of the game and raced out to a 13-2 lead with the contest barely five minutes old. Danahy capped the surge with the first of her four three-pointers.

An 8-0 run late in the first half, got the Red Hawks within five, 35-30, but Danahy scored the last nine points of the session with three straight threes.

William Smith maintained a double digit advantage throughout the second half, leading by as many as 26. The 92-point outburst is the most scored by the Herons since hanging 104 on Manhattanville on Nov. 25, 2001.

William Smith is back in action on Jan. 19, when the Herons visit Vassar (4-5, 0-1). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
