Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team shot 50 percent from the floor and put four players in double digits in the scoring column, but Vassar College escaped with a 78-73 Liberty League win. The Statesmen fall to 5-9 overall, 0-3 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers improve to 10-1, 2-0.
First-year forward Adam Salzmann (Kingston/Connelly, N.Y.) led Hobart with 13 points and nine rebounds, while first-year guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) added 12 points, four steals, and three assists. Senior forward John Grazioli (St. Anthony’s/Melville, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 boards. First-year guard Rob Estep (West York/York, Pa.) also scored 11 points for the Statesmen.
Lawrence Avitabile recorded game-highs for Vassar with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Brian Butterworth notched 23 points for the Brewers, sinking seven three-pointers.
Vassar used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to balloon a seven-point advantage to a 16-point lead. Butterworth scored all nine points from behind the arc. The Brewers carried a 41-32 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Hobart kept its deficit in single digits for most of the session. Llewellyn knocked down a three with 19 seconds remaining to make the score 75-73. Vassar’s Tyson Brazell made 1-of-2 from the free throw line to make it a three-point game, but the Statesmen’s hopes of an upset disappeared with nine seconds remaining with the team’s 20th turnover.
Hobart is back in action on Jan. 25, when the Statesmen travel to Skidmore. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
