Rachel Ormsby posted a double-double with 20 points (4 threes) and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Michelle Rogers added 13 points.
Unlike the Herons’ nine previous wins that came by an average of 15.1 points, William Smith found itself in a fight to the finish with Union. A nip-and-tuck affair, the contest was deadlocked seven times, while the lead changed hands 11 times.
The Dutchwomen held the game’s largest lead, 16-8, early in the first half. The Herons erased that deficit and took a 38-33 lead into halftime. In the second half, William Smith led by as many as six as late as the 3:04 mark, but an 8-2 run to close out the half necessitated overtime. Tobin hit the tying shot, a three, with two seconds left in regulation.
Union took the lead in overtime on a Rogers layup at 4:34, but Cunningham made a traditional three-point play to put the Herons in front, 72-71 with 4:24 left. William Smith never relinquished the lead. Cunningham had seven of the Herons’ nine overtime points.
William Smith is back on the court on Jan. 29, when the Herons travel to Hamilton for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
