Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.--William Smith College senior forward
Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) scored 12 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as William Smith defeated Potsdam State 84-75 in Division III basketball action. Senior guard
Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) led the Herons with 22 points and nine assists, both game highs.
Vespa and Czajkowski were joined in double digits by graduate guard
Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) and sophomore forward
Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.). Foote scored 16 points, including 12 from the free throw line, while Cunningham recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.
Czajkowski is just the 12th Heron to reach the 1,000-point plateau (she now has 1,002) and the first since Laura Hadwin '03 joined the club on Jan. 18, 2003.
Sophomore guard Courtney Poirier (Bruston-Moira/Moira, N.Y.) led three Bears in double digits with 19 points.
William Smith (6-1) was a bit rusty to start the contest, a side effect of its 18-day holiday layoff. Potsdam State jumped out to an 11-4 lead. An 8-0 run bookended by baskets by senior guard
Kristen Suatoni (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.), erased the Bears' advantage and gave the Herons their first lead of the day, 12-11.
The lead changed hands three more times and was tied twice, before a 14-3 run gave Potsdam (5-4) a 29-22 lead with 5:44 remaining in the first half. The Herons whittled their deficit down to one with 21 seconds to go, before a pair of Poirier free throws sent the home team into the locker room with a 38-35 lead.
While neither team shot particularly well in the first half, William Smith caught fire after the break, knocking down 60.9 percent from the floor. Vespa sank all three three-pointers attempted by the Herons.
Vespa dialed long distance with the first shot of the second half, wiping out Potsdam's lead. The Bears answered with a two-pointer at the other end of the floor, but an 8-2 run led by Czajkowski put William Smith in front for good. Czajkowski scored three of the Herons' four field goals on the surge, the last accounting for her 1,000th career point.
The Herons kept the Bears at arms length, never allowing the home team to get within a single possession over the final 10 minutes of the contest. William Smith maintained a lead of at least four and as many as 10 down the stretch.
The Herons are back in action on Jan. 8, when they travel to 16th-ranked Cortland State. Tipoff with the Red Dragons is scheduled for 6 p.m.
