Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked Hobart College soccer team defeated Skidmore 2-1 this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen continue to be unbeaten, improving to 12-0-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in Liberty League play, while the Thoroughbreds drop to 7-5-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the league.
Hobart got on the board early, just 12 minutes, 59 seconds into the match. Senior midfielder
Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) curved a corner kick into the back right corner of the goal to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, senior defender
Matt Schwartz (Lower Merion/Wynnewood, Pa.) knocked in another Hobart tally on a scramble in front of the goal. The Statesmen took the 2-0 lead into the break.
At the 57:08 mark, Schoeniger drew a red card and was ejected, leaving the Statesmen to play a man-down for the remainder of the contest.
Skidmore eventually took advantage of the man-up situation, as senior midfielder Pat Phelan (Choate Rosemary Hall/Wallingford, Conn.) got loose on a breakaway in the 82nd minute. Senior Hobart goalkeeper
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) got in front of Phelan's shot, nearly making the save, but the ball deflected off him and into the goal.
The Statesmen out shot their visitors 19-12, and took 10 corner kicks to the Thoroughbred's three.
Van Dellon finished with four saves. Skidmore goalie Lucas Millington (Chatham Central/Chatham Center, N.Y.) shutout the Statesmen after entering the game in the 18th minute, also collecting four saves.
Hobart will be back in action on Oct. 15, when the Statesmen host Ithaca for their final regular season home game at 4:30 p.m.
