William Smith falls at Skidmore 2-0

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The 16th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team fell at 20th-ranked Skidmore this afternoon, 2-0. The Herons dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 8-3 on the season and 4-1 in the conference.

Skidmore's Christine Kemp was responsible for both goals. The first came in the 10th minute, as teammate Annie Rosencrans passed the ball to Kemp for the tip-in. Kemp's second tally came in the 42nd minute. She took the ball down the left side from midfield for the unassisted score.

William Smith sophomore forward Emily Atwan (Pomfret School/Milton, Mass.) had a breakaway opportunity with four minutes left to play in the first half, but couldn't get past Thoroughbred goalkeeper Liz Catinella.

Senior forward Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.) and junior forward Kaitlyn Hamilton (Harpursville/Harpursville, N.Y.) had back-to-back chances to score in the first few minutes of the second stanza, but Catinella again came up with stops for Skidmore.

In the final 18 minutes of the contest, the Herons bombarded the Thoroughbred defense with six shots and seven penalty corners, but could not break through.

William Smith sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Snyder (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) collected seven saves in her first collegiate start, while Catinella finished with 10.

The Herons will be back in action on Oct. 15, when they travel to Cortland for a non-league game at 4:30 p.m.
