#8 Statesmen soar over Red Dragons

Box Score The eighth-ranked Hobart College hockey team handily defeated Cortland State tonight 8-3 in The Cooler. The Statesmen improve to 2-1-0 overall, while the Red Dragons fall to 1-2-0 on the season.

Sophomore forwards Pat Moriarty (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Matt Wallace (Skaneateles, N.Y.) paced Hobart with three points each. Moriarty netted two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist, while Wallace notched a goal and two helpers. Greg Haney scored two goals for Cortland.

Cortland struck first, tallying eight minutes, 14 seconds into the game. Haney recorded the goal, assisted by Jarrett Gold and Patrick Palmisano.

The Statesmen evened the game at 1-all less than five minutes later, as junior forward Nick DeCroo (Sarver, Pa.) lit the lamp on assists from junior center Bobby Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and senior forward Jason Merritt (Chapel Hill, N.C.).

Hobart increased its lead to 3-1 in the second period, after a power play goal by Wallace at 4:09, and a tally from sophomore forward Christopher Bower (Chevy Chase, Md.) at 10:56. Junior defenseman Drew Wadsworth (Arlington, Va.) and senior defenseman Andy Brennan (Milford, Mass.) recorded assists.

With less than four minutes to play in the second stanza, the Red Dragons scored to cut their deficit to one. Alex Arthur found Jake Saville for the goal, and Hobart took a slim 3-2 lead into the final break.

The Statesmen erupted for five goals in the third period, including both of Moriarty's tallies. Cahill, senior defenseman Bryant Harris (Plainfield, N.H.), and sophomore forward Tom Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) all scored as well.

Hanley netted his second goal at 18:06 in the third period, but the Red Dragons would run out of time.

Senior Statesman goaltender Keith Longo (Hopedale, Mass.) collected 36 saves, while Red Dragon goalie Dan Jewell picked up 27 saves.

Hobart will be back in action on Oct. 31, when it hosts Brockport for a non-league contest at 7 p.m. Fans unable to make it to The Cooler can follow along online with live stats.
