#8 Statesmen outlast Golden Eagles

Box Score The Hobart College hockey team defeated Brockport State 3-2 tonight in non-league action at The Cooler. The eighth-ranked Statesmen improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-1-0 overall.

Junior forward Aleksey Koval (Kiev, Ukraine), senior forward Jason Merritt (Chapel Hill, N.C.), and junior center Blake Bonham (Toronto, Ontario) generated all of Hobart's offense tonight. Koval and Merritt each notched a goal and two assists, while Bonham added a goal and a helper.

Just 4 minutes, 3 seconds into the game, Merritt and Koval found Bonham on a power play for the first Statesmen tally.

The Golden Eagles answered in the 13th minute, thanks to a goal from Lucas Schott. Jason Gorrie took a shot that rebounded off Hobart senior goaltender Keith Longo (Milford, Mass.), and Schott was there for the put back. Sean O'Malley also recorded an assist on the play.

In the second period, Hobart took a 2-1 lead at 6:51. Merritt netted the goal, assisted by Koval and Bonham. Less than three minutes later the Statesmen increased their lead, as Merritt set up Koval for the eventual game-winner.

Brockport's Mike Gershon cut the host's lead to 3-2 at the end of the second stanza, but his goal would end the game's scoring. Ryan Silveira and Ray Tremblay picked up the helpers.

The Golden Eagles out shot the Statesmen 45-34. Longo played an outstanding game in net, finishing with 43 saves. Oliver Wren collected 31 stops for Brockport.

Hobart will be in action again on Nov. 7, when the Statesmen travel to Elmira for their first ECAC West game of the season at 7 p.m.
