Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked Messiah College field hockey team defeated No. 13 William Smith 5-0 on McCooey Field this afternoon. The Falcons improve to 6-1 with the non-conference win, while the Herons slip to 8-2.
The Falcons needed just 39 seconds to open the scoring, when senior Nikki Bailey (West Perry/Elliottsburg, Pa.) tipped a shot by junior Elizabeth Ziegler (Eastern Lebanon Co./Myerstown, Pa.) into the cage. A short time later, Bailey tipped another shot into the cage, but it was waived off as dangerous.
In the 29th minute, sophomore Kourtney Ehly (Bioling Springs/Boiling Springs, Pa.) made it 2-0 off an assist from junior Katrina Campbell (Octorara/Cochranville, Pa.), an advantage the Falcons carried into halftime.
Bailey, sophomore Lauren Tennis (Warwick/Lititz, Pa.), and Ehly added second half goals to complete the scoring.
Messiah junior goalie Ashley Mowery (Northern/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) made one save to post the shutout, while Heron senior
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) stopped nine of the 13 shots she faced in 60 minutes, 4 seconds. Sophomore
Chelsea Snyder (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) notched one save on two shots in relief.
William Smith is back in action on Oct. 10 when the Herons visit Union. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
