Box Score The fourth-ranked Hobart College soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 win over Cabrini College this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen improve to 17-0-3 on the season, while the Cavaliers end the year with a 15-4-2 mark.
Hobart netted both goals in the second half. Sophomore midfielder
Kevin McCarthy (Ocean City/Seaville, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season in the 54th minute. After a long throw-in from sophomore midfielder
Justin Dotzman (Council Rock South/Holland, Pa.), the Cabrini defense cleared the ball straight to the foot of McCarthy, who lofted the ball over goalkeeper Bryan Johnson and into the back of the net.
At the 67 minute, 8 second mark, first-year midfielder
Clancy Purcell (Shelton/Shelton, Conn.) ripped a shot from 25 yards out, putting the Statesmen up 2-0. Sophomore defender
Matt Geswell (Carmel/Patterson, N.Y.) assisted on the play.
Hobart senior goalkeeper
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) collected four saves en route to his season record-tying 10th shutout this fall. Dino Dimkopoulous also notched 10 in 1988. Johnson finished with 11 saves for the Cavaliers.
The Statesmen held a 22-11 advantage in shots, and took 11 corner kicks to Cabrini's six.
