#5 William Smith advances to championship match

Box Score The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated St. Lawrence 1-0 this afternoon on in the Liberty League Tournament semifinal match on Cozzens Field. The Herons advance to the championship game tomorrow and improve to 13-1-3 overall, while the Saints fall to 10-5-3 on the season.

Junior midfielder Katelyn Tyson (Leland/San Jose, Calif.) netted the lone goal of the day 17 minutes, 45 seconds into the game to give William Smith the 1-0 lead. After a corner kick from senior midfielder Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.), a St. Lawrence defender headed the ball to the top of the box and straight to the waiting foot of Tyson. She lofted the ball to the goal, deflecting it off Saints' goalkeeper Abby van Geldern and into the back left corner of the net.

The Herons tallied on their first attempt, and went on to outshoot their visitors 4-1 in the first half. William Smith sophomore forward Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) had a chance to put her team up 2-0 in the 35th minute, but her shot on a free kick went just high.

St. Lawrence came out firing in the second half, out shooting the Herons 9-3. Megan Howard had two great opportunities to score for the Saints in the 50th and 53rd minutes. Her first shot was rejected by the crossbar, and her second went just high.

William Smith first-year goalkeeper Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Succasunna, N.J.) collected two saves in her seventh shutout of the year, while van Geldern finished with one stop.

The top-seeded Herons will take on third-seeded Skidmore (13-4-3) tomorrow, Nov. 8, in the Liberty League Tournament championship match at 11 a.m. Fans unable to make it to Cozzens Field can listen live on WHWS-FM or follow along online with live stats.
