Blake Bonham's power-play goal with 2:42 remaining in the third period lifted the 11th-ranked Hobart hockey team to a 3-2 victory over ECAC West rival Utica in The Cooler tonight.
Bonham poked home the game-winner, slipping the puck between Justin Bolla's pads after a shot by senior
Jason Merritt. His sixth tally of the season gave the Statesmen (9-3-0, 3-2-0) their first lead of the night.
Hobart dominated the action in the first period, outshooting Utica 20-5, but the teams headed into the intermission without a goal on the board. In contrast, both teams scored twice in the second period.
Russell Anderson gave the Pioneers (6-3-1, 3-2-0) the lead, just 1:24 into the frame off assists by Kregg Guestin and Soichiro Omi. Sophomore
Matthew Wallace equalized, thanks to an assist from classmate
Patrick Moriarty, at the 8:05 mark.
Utica retook the lead on Bryce Dale's power-play goal with 5:09 left in the session. Jake Coyle set up the score with a cross-ice pass that forced senior goalie
Keith Longo to slide across his crease. Dale's shot slipped inside the far post. The Pioneers finished 1-for-8 on the power play.
The Statesmen tied the game again four second before the end of the period. Junior
Nick DeCroo's team-leading eighth goal of the year came courtesy of the power play and assists from senior
Kirk Golden and junior
Bobby Cahill. Hobart was 2-for-7 on the power play.
Longo notched his 40th career win with 32 saves, while Bolla capped the night with 35 stops.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Dec. 6, when they host Manhattanville at 4 p.m.
