Hamilton tops Hobart 79-64

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hamilton College basketball team rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to post a 79-64 Liberty League victory over Hobart College in Bristol Gym tonight. The Continentals used 11 threes and 30 free throws to overcome a 37.3 percent shooting night.

Hamilton (15-7, 8-4) charged out of the gate, taking a 13-2 lead before the contest was five minutes old. Undaunted, the Statesmen outscored their guests 17-5 over the final 7 minutes, 45 seconds of the stanza—including the final five minutes that saw the Continentals go 0-for-8 from the floor—to carry a 29-27 lead into halftime.

Hobart scored seven unanswered points in a two-minute span to build a 49-39 lead at the 12:37 mark of the second half. First-year guard Mark Bruce (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) keyed the run with five of his team-high 17 points.

Hamilton fought back, using 10 unanswered points to reclaim the lead, 54-52, with 6:45 to go. Junior forward Harlee Wood (Bishop McNamara/Clinton, Md.) capped the run with a three-pointer on his way to a 17-point, seven-rebound, four-assist, three-block performance.

Twenty-three seconds later, first-year guard Rob Estep (West York/York, Pa.) tied the game with a pair of free throws, but junior guard Ramunas Rozgys (St. Anne’s-Belfield School/Naujoji Akmene, Lithuania) and Wood connected on back-to-back threes, followed by a Rozgys layup to put the Continentals back in front for good. Estep notched 14 points on the night, while Rozgys finished with 12 points.

Sophomore guard Jay Simpson (St. John’s College HS/Fort Washington, Md.) and junior guard Kyle Dumas (Massena/Massena, N.Y.) chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Hamilton. The Continentals were 11-of-26 from long range and 30-of-38 from the free throw line.

Hobart (10-13, 5-7) is back in action on Feb. 22, when the Statesmen host Union at 8 p.m.
