Slow start costs Hobart laxers in opener

Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa.--The Hobart lacrosse team lost its season opener to 15th-ranked Bucknell 10-9 at Christy Mathewson Stadium this afternoon. The Statesmen are 0-1, while the Bison even their record at 1-1.

Hobart found itself in a 2-0 hole after the first quarter. Bucknell opened the scoring with an extra-man tally less than three minutes in. The home team doubled its lead at the 4:42 mark.

The Statesmen answered with two quick goals to start the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Mike Suits (CBA/Jamesville, N.Y.) scored an extra-man goal assisted by senior attackman Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario). Eleven seconds later, first-year long-stick midfielder Alex Caton (Bridgton Academy/Rochester, N.Y.) rifled home a shot for his first collegiate goal.

The Bison again produced back-to-back goals to build a 4-2 lead with 6:26 remaining in the half. Sophomore attackman Kevin Curtin (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) halved Hobart's deficit 1:25 before halftime off an assist from Kirk.

Bucknell carried a two-goal advantage into the break thanks to a Ryan Klipstein goal 13 ticks before the buzzer.

Like the second quarter, the third quarter proved to be a draw as the teams traded goals. Sophomore midfielder Mike Lazore (Immaculate Heart/Carthage, N.Y.), Kirk, and Curtin netted the goals for Hobart.

Lazore's second goal of the day opened the fourth quarter scoring and trimmed Bucknell's lead to 8-7. The Bison answered less than a minute later, but back-to-back scores by junior attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.) and Curtin tied the game at 9-all with 7:26 left to play. Colburn's goal came on the extra-man, where Hobart was 2-of-5 and Bucknell 1-of-5.

Nick Marks gave the Bison the afternoon's final goal with 5:49 to go.

After Hobart killed off a pair of time stealing penalties, the Statesmen got a pair of shots off in the final 30 seconds. Back at even strength, senior midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) stole a pass, ran the length of the field, and had his shot saved with about 17 seconds left. Suits shot wide with three ticks left. On the restart from behind the cage, Kirk's pass was broken up in front.

Bucknell goalie Nick Scuibba finished with 14 saves, while Statesmen sophomore Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) stopped nine.

Curtin (3-1) and Kirk (1-3) led the way for the Statesmen with four points apiece. Lazore (2-1) and Suits (1-2) both recorded three-point days. Senior faceoff specialist Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) dominated at the faceoff X, winning 14-of-20 restarts and collecting a game-high nine ground balls.

Klipstein led all scorers with five points on four goals and an assist. Austin Winter added a goal and two assists.

Hobart will play its home opener on Sat., March 1, when the Statesmen host Hartford on McCooey Field at 1 p.m.
