Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team defeated Vassar College 57-56 in Liberty League action in Bristol Gym tonight. First-year guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) hit the game-winning basket with 13 seconds remaining and the Statesmen limited the Brewers to just a single, rushed three-point attempt down the stretch to secure the win.
Hobart first-year guard Rob Estep (West York/York, Pa.) notched team-highs with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Llewellyn finished with seven points, five assists, and five steals. First-year forward Michael Barlow (Seton Catholic/Phoenix, Ariz.) contributed eight points of the bench.
Senior forward Lawrence Avitabile (Southington/Southington, Conn.) led the Brewers with 18 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and three blocked shots. Junior forward Matt Nunn (Abington Friends/Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) added nine points, all in the first half.
A tight contest from start to finish, neither team was able to pull away at any point. Vassar (14-4, 5-3) held the largest lead of the game, 13-5, at the 14:22 mark of the first half, and also had the largest lead of the second stanza, 35-29, at the 18:54 mark.
The Statesmen (9-10, 4-4) refused to give in, chipping away at the Brewer lead. Estep gave Hobart its first lead of the second half, 42-41, on a three-pointer. The lead seesawed back and forth over the final 11 minutes, changing hands four times in the time frame.
Senior guard Tyson Brazell’s (Waterford School/Salt Lake City, Utah) three from the right corner with 29 seconds to go, put the Brewers in front for the final time, 56-55, setting up Llewellyn’s heroics.
With fouls to give, Vassar fouled Llewellyn near the top of the arc to slow Hobart down. Estep put the ball back in play with a pass to Llewellyn at midcourt. He drove down the right side of the lane, drew a triple team, and got off the winning shot, despite being fouled.
Llewellyn missed the free throw and then the Statesmen, with only five fouls against, fouled to slow down the Brewers. With just three seconds remaining, Vassar got off a hurried three, but the try missed its mark and Estep collected the carom to ice the victory.
