Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore guard Sean McHugh (Holy Trinity/Mineola, N.Y.) scored a career-high 21 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Hobart College basketball team to an 81-76 Liberty League victory over Rensselaer. The Statesmen shot 51 percent from the floor and knocked down a season-high 11 threes to post their fifth win in their past six contests.
First-year guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) contributed 16 points and a season-high seven steals, while first-year guard Rob Estep (West York/York, Pa.) notched 12 points and a season-high seven assists. Senior forward John Grazioli (St. Anthony’s/Melville, N.Y.) also hit double digits for Hobart (10-10, 5-4), finishing with 11 points.
Three Red Hawks (9-11, 4-5) hit double digits led by senior forward Sam Simmons’ (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) game-highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Sam Zullo (Broadalbin-Perth/Indian Lake, N.Y.) and first-year guard Jeremy Bull (St. Stephens & St. Agnes School/Woodbridge, Va.) both chipped in 16 points.
The Statesmen seized control of the contest midway through the first half, using a 14-4 run to break an 18-all tie. Senior forward Dan O’Grady (St. Dominic’s/East Norwich, N.Y.) capped the surge with three-pointer at the 3:53 mark. McHugh sent Hobart into the break up 40-28 with another three-pointer just a couple of seconds ahead of the final horn.
In the second half, the Statesmen led by at least 10 points and by as many as 18, until the final 85 seconds. A three by Bull and a traditional three-point play by Simmons reduced Hobart’s 10 point lead to just four, 78-74, with 30 seconds to go, but the Statesmen sank 3-of-4 from the free throw line down to stretch to keep control.
Hobart is back in action at 8 p.m. on Feb. 15, when the Statesmen visit St. Lawrence.
