Statesmen fall to #3 Elmira in ECAC West semifinal

Box Score ELMIRA, N.Y.—The seventh-ranked Hobart College hockey team fell to No.3 Elmira tonight 6-3 in the semifinal round of the ECAC West Tournament. The Statesmen drop to 18-7-2 on the season, while the Soaring Eagles improve to 19-2-5 overall.

First-year Matthew Wallace (Skaneateles, N.Y.) scored two of Hobart’s three goals tonight, with classmate Tom Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) assisting on both. Sophomore Nick DeCroo (Sarver, Pa.) recorded the other Statesmen tally.

Elmira started things off, netting back-to-back goals in the 11th and 13th minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Six seconds after the host’s second goal, Wallace connected with Hobart’s first score of the night. Less than a minute later, DeCroo lit the lamp to tie the game at 2-all. Juniors Andrew Brennan (Milford, Mass.) and Jason Merritt (Chapel Hill, N.C.) assisted on the goal.

In the second period, Soaring Eagles Michael Richards and Rusty Masters each netted goals, putting Elmira up 4-2 at the second break.

The hosts recorded another tally just 1 minute, 35 seconds into the third period to take a 5-2 lead. Wallace notched his second goal of the night with under a minute remaining, but Hobart could not recover. Elmira scored its sixth goal on an empty Statesmen net with 19 ticks on the clock.

Neither team recorded power play goal in the contest, as Hobart was 0-of-1, and Elmira was 0-for-2. The Statesmen held a slim 36-35 advantage in shots.

Junior goalkeeper Keith Longo (Hopedale, Mass.) collected 29 saves, while Soaring Eagle goalie Casey Tuttle picked up 33 stops.
