Box Score WASHINGTON—The Hobart College lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal fourth quarter deficit only to have No. 12 Georgetown’s Andrew Baird score his fifth goal of the game with 2:16 remaining in the second overtime period, lifting the Hoyas to a 13-12 ECAC Lacrosse League win. Baird finished with six points, as did Statesmen senior attackman
Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Coquitlam, B.C.), who recorded four goals and two assists.
Veltman raised his career totals to 87 goals and 44 assists for 131 points, moving into a tie for third place among Division I Statesmen in career goals with Jared Bebee ’00, while taking sole possession of third place on the DI career points list.
Classmate
Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) added two goals, including the game-tying tally with 1:15 remaining in regulation, and three assists. He moved into third place on Hobart’s DI career assists list with 49.
Following Baird’s fourth goal of the day, the Statesmen (2-2, 0-1) trailed 12-9 with 13:02 remaining. Sophomore midfielder
Mike Lazore (Immaculate Heart/Carthage, N.Y.) kicked off the rally with his fourth goal of the season, set up by junior d-middie
Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) at 11:39.
Hobart still trailed by two as the clock ticked under four minutes. Kirk gave the Statesmen hope, depositing a feed from Lazore with 3:40 to go, and forced overtime off an assist from Veltman. The game-tying goal was set up by junior goalie
Brad Hester (Woodbridge/Woodbridge, Va.), who was brought in for his speed in the 10-man ride. He did his job collecting the ground ball that got Hobart possession on the way to Kirk’s score.
The Statesmen never trailed in the opening 30 minutes. Senior midfielder
Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.) and Veltman netted consecutive goals to give Hobart a 2-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. Baird answered for Georgetown (3-2, 2-0) with back-to-back goals 36 seconds apart to tie the contest. Currie and senior midfielder
Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) sandwiched scores around a Georgetown man-up goal by Craig Dowd (2g 2a) to give Hobart a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Veltman restored Hobart’s two-goal lead early in the second quarter, but Baird and Dowd scored in succession to tie the game at 5-5. The Statesmen took a lead into halftime, however, thanks to Smalley’s goal 7.7 seconds before the break.
The Hoyas doubled up Hobart in the third quarter, outscoring the Statesmen 6-3 to take an 11-9 lead into the fourth frame. Georgetown’s half dozen came out off the sticks of six different players, while Veltman and junior attackman
Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.) accounted for Hobart’s scores. Colburn had a goal and two assists in the contest.
Hobart had a clear edge at the faceoff X thanks to senior
Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.), who won 17 of 28 restarts and collected six ground balls. Smalley and sophomore goalie
Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) were both credited with six ground balls as well.
Silberlicht produced a career-high 18 saves, including two in overtime, while his Hoya counterpart, Miles Kass, made 14 stops (1 in OT).
Georgetown had a slight advantage in shots (46-43), while ground balls were dead even (38 apiece) and clears were nearly identical. The Statesmen were 1-of-6 on the extra man, while the Hoyas were 2-of-7.
Long the Achilles’ heel of Hobart lacrosse teams, the Statesmen drop to 9-24 all-time in overtime contests. It’s the second time the Statesmen have lost to the Hoyas in OT, dropping an 11-10 decision in D.C. in 1996.
The Statesmen will aim to get back in the win column at 2 p.m. on March 18, when they faceoff with Presbyterian College at Collegiate School, in Richmond, Va.
