Box Score LAKE LYTAL, Fla.—The 18th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team defeated Messiah College today 20-16, in its final contest during spring break. The Herons improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 1-3.
William Smith was led by the multiple scoring efforts of six Herons. Senior
Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) notched four goals, including the game-winner, two assists, and five ground balls, while senior
Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.) recorded three goals and four assists on the day. Sophomores
Sarah Goodkind (Millbrook School/Greenwich, Conn.) and
Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) each tallied four times, while senior
Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and junior
Nina Sperry (Daniel Hand/Madison, Conn.) both scored twice. Goodkind also recorded an assist and collected six ground balls. Stahl registered an assist as well.
Kara Geiman led the Falcons with six goals and three assists, while Jackie Dando added five goals and a helper, and Jessica Van Hook tallied three times and set up two goals.
William Smith took a quick 2-0 lead following goals 31 seconds apart from Goodkind and Fitzgerald in the fourth minute of play. Geiman scored her first of the game at the 7 minute, 19 second mark, but the Herons took over from there, scoring three in a one minute span to take a 5-1 lead at 9:09.
The Falcons went on to outscore the Herons 6-4 in the remainder of the first half, but William Smith retained the 9-7 lead at the break.
The Herons came out firing in the second stanza. They netted four goals in the first three minutes, from the sticks of Davidson, Goodkind, Fitzgerald, and Sperry, to take a 13-7 advantage. Messiah scored the next three goals, but William Smith answered with four more to keep the Falcons at bay, 17-10.
Messiah made one last run, closing the gap to three in the final six minutes, but a free position tally from first-year Heron
Marlowe Mavian (Wellington School/Columbus, Ohio) insured the 20-16 William Smith victory. The goal marked the first of Mavian’s collegiate career.
Junior goalie
Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) picked up four saves in net for the Herons.
William Smith will be back in action on March 25, when it travels to St. John Fisher for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
